The application of returnable package in the automotive industry.

Automotive manufacturing is recognized as one of the earliest applications of recyclable packaging. Now that reusable, circular packaging is becoming more dominant, many factories are beginning to reject single-use packaging.

The complexity of the automotive industry places high demands on the variety of packaging materials and the ability to design custom solutions. Auto parts generally have very high requirements on appearance, and there should be no hard collision or friction during transportation to produce any scratches.

Unlike carton packaging, during transportation, handling, loading, and unloading, there will be different degrees of damage, and the products in the package will also be damaged to a certain extent. Additionally, new cars require a highly polished finish, requiring parts to use custom recyclable outer packaging and specialized recyclable inner linings for optimal protection. Reusable packaging provides stronger container packaging at a lower cost per shipping compared to single-use packaging.

Other benefits of reusable packaging for the automotive industry include the precise placement of parts for robotic assembly; increased loading density of parts in packaging containers; stackable containers that better utilize space in shipping vehicles. The storage density, volume utilization, and shared services of parts and components are becoming increasingly important in the context of the globalization of supply chains.

The situation in the automotive industry is constantly changing, and the demand for recyclable packaging will only increase.

1. Vehicle selection is becoming more and more complex. In the near future, we will face options such as electric vehicles, autonomous driving, new ride-sharing models, and more. Solutions such as parts assembly will limit line inventory and provide OEMs the flexibility they need to optimize a complex customization-oriented production process.

2. More sensitive components will require protective packaging. The focus will shift from the exterior of the car to the interior, which will require more anti-static (ESD)-enabled recyclable packaging.

3. Smaller parts will create opportunities for different packaging methods. Electric vehicles will feature smaller electric motors, transmissions, and associated drivetrain components. Multiple smaller engines would be better suited to a standardized recyclable plastic pallet box that holds multiple engines and is compatible with automated systems for picking and placing these parts.

4. Packaging design and certification of lithium batteries. For lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles, there are new packaging challenges to ensure safe transportation. Factors such as the condition of the battery, the weight of the battery, and the method of transportation all come into play. Every time a change is made, it needs to be repackaged.

Returnable package has played an integral role in car manufacturing for decades. This partnership will continue to evolve to meet the automotive industry's changing needs as vehicles transition to electric, autonomous and ride-sharing markets.
